De-Icer is a driveway killer.

Did your Driveway Survive the Winter?

How Does the De-Icer Affect My Concrete Driveway?

The concrete can become spalled or spall. What happens is the top layer of concrete flakes and chips up exposing the aggregates within the concrete. It’s very unsightly and can really make the entrance to your home look terrible.

Salt is the number one thing  we’re asked about – rock salt. It’s great for making ice cream but it’s not something I recommend to use on your concrete driveway or sidewalks. It will leave a residue whcih can track into your home and get into your carpets. Salt will prematurely melt the ice and allow water to get into whats called the capillaries of the concrete which will then freeze and expand and create spall… which is essentially removing the cream from the surface of the concrete.

spall is defined as flakes of material that are broken off of a larger solid body. Concrete spalling typically begins when the steel reinforcing embedded within the concrete member rusts. … These expansive forces can cause the concrete to delaminate or to crack, spall, and break off.

Specially formulated to restore lackluster concrete, resurfacing products like Rapid Set NewCrete (available from The Home Depot) make it quick and easy for homeowners to address spalling on their own, without having to hire a contractor. The resurfacing material simply spreads over the existing, spalled concrete surface to create a fresh, flawless finish.

NewCrete in particular stands out, because it simplifies and speeds up the process. For one thing, it rarely requires the use of primer. For another, you can consider the job done as soon as the product has been applied, because in most conditions, NewCrete cures all by itself. You can return to regular use of your driveway after only 60 to 90 minutes.

Next week we will go over the steps to resurfacing your concrete driveway.
